Though I do not write in the theme, one of the more winsome subgenres I enjoy is what is commonly referred to as either steampunk or gaslight fantasies.

Normally taking place in the Victorian era, all technology is powered by coal and steam with lots of gears and mechanical glory and everybody wears goggles.

Here is an article on what they consider the top five films/tv shows based on the genre:

In the list, I am only aware of Steamboy which I own.

My favorite online gaslight cartoon is Girl Genius. (Warning: PG rating)

And I waste w-a-y too much time at Brass Goggles, a steampunk-oriented blog that has some of the most awesome photographs I've ever enjoyed.

Enjoy your side trip to a time when men were men and women could build a robot out of kitchen utensils and a teapot.

Odd to see ths Victorian Age being so glorified, considering the (by modern standards) rampant sexism, racism, and all the other evilbad -isms that were celebrated by society back then.

Not that the 'good people' of today are any better -- indeed, I'd say that they're every bit as bad as the most ignorant Victorian*. Hmm, maybe that's where the admiration comes from?

* -- Go and read a Victorian era rant on Catholicism. The read one of the modern 'exposes' on the subject. I defy you to find a difference.

Nostalgia always glosses over the imperfections of the past.
