Of Barn Swallows and Mowed Lawns

The local barn swallows are brave little souls and they love when I mow my lawn as it stirs up the insects.

The result is that they bravely swoop within inches of my face and mower knowing I'll keep my snail's pace and not bump into them. This afternoon I had about six or seven playing acrobat around me.

I really couldn't see what they were eating until I was facing the sun and then I could see I had stirred up clouds of midges which became the barn swallow equivalent of McDonald's.

Speaking of mowing lawns, the church's neighbor is temporarily gone from her house and living with her sickly mother and today asked me if I could mow her lawn. I should have looked at it first.

This evening I went over it with a broken riding mower that took the grass height from 8 inches to about 2 to 4 inches (the deck is broken and uneven so the lawn looks like a flock of deranged sheep gummed it to death).

Tomorrow, I'll rake up the excess and then go over the whole thing with a gasoline-powered push mower. Then on Wednesday, I'll weed whack it. It's almost an acre.

No rest for the wicked, they say.
